Dear Dumbledore,

I am a new student that just transferred to your fine teaching establishment. I was previously magic-homeschooled in Africa, but now I'm attending Hogwarts, and it's a bit overwhelming!

Do you have any advice on how I should go about making friends and what I should do to fit in? I've heard that Ginny Weasley has her hair insured for $10,000 and that even though Harry Potter keeps flirting with me in Care of Magical Creatures Class, I shouldn't talk to him because he and Ginny are kind of a ~thing. By the way, is he really the Chosen One?

I was sorted into Gryffindor and I started hanging out with Ginny Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Lavender Brown... I guess Ginny's kind of the queen Bee, Hermione's hair is so big because it's full of secrets, and Lavender once asked Neville how to spell orange. Are these girls good friends, or should I stick with Neville Longbotom and Luna Lovegood? They were just so nice to me on the first day of school and I have no idea what to do and I'd appreciate your advice.

Confused Homeschooled Jungle-freak,
Cady Heron

Dear Draco,
It is good to see you are watching muggle films.
- Albus

The first edition of the term, and I have lots of treats to share with you. Since, for the first time in a while, we have a nice selection of fanfics from each house, I'm going to go with the theme of house unity!

Starting with Gryffindor, Tainted Love by rhye may be short, but it's a fantastic read. Not for those who avoid kink, this double drabble is dripping with incestuous tones and manages to pull off shock and awe at the same time, and it has a hint of hero!Remus, which no one can deny is awesome.

Coming in from Hufflepuff there is hiddengrace's Freak School. Now, I have a soft spot for baby Lily & Petunia fanfics and this one hits the spot. Sweet, innocent but slightly bitchy Lily, meets protective, loving but just as bitchy Petunia. A definite recommendation for those that love the Evans.

From Ravenclaw we have Caught (in a Storm) by an_ardent_rain. This touching marauder era story manages to be heart-warming without being maudlin, a great accomplishment and a lovely quick read for any Marauder fan (especially those of you who love picking up Remus/Sirius undertones).

And finally Slytherin brings us The many Resolutions of Draco Malfoy, Aged 9 by alpha_hannah. I was very excited to start reading (and writing! I must get round to doing mine for this prompt.) fics for the hh_writersblock's challenge for this month (New Year's) Resolutions and Hannah doesn't disappoint. I must have a thing for ickle versions of the characters, but little Draco has been written so many ways, and each I love. This fic shows Draco as a naive, nine year old boy and an insight into why he's so cruel in the books, and it's a fantastic job with wonderful characterisation.

Don't forget to check out the current challenges at Writer's Block and Sugarquill (as well as any past challenges at either one) and if you're feeling up to the task, pull out your quill for a little writing.

Gryffindor fanartists have been painting hh_sugarquill red and gold. We have three pieces of digital art done in striking black and white by purplie and an impressive life-like Harry by nicccc who also gave us Hermione drawn on very interesting canvas; definitely check out her artist tag. prongsy brings The Philosopher's Stone to life with three poignant scenes from the book here.

Kicking off the term at sortedchallenge with a Gryffindor sweep for Challenge 1 are voldemortslayer, alwaysawkward, and red_planet31 in first, second, and third place respectively. The most humorous icon was done by fizz_buzz, also of Gryffindor.

The other houses took up the gauntlet laid down by Gryffindor and Challenge 12 went to fairytaleaddict of Ravenclaw, enchantedteacup of Slytherin, and whitestar of Ravenclaw. Special category went to thecowboycliche of Hufflepuff.

Challenge 3 went to princessbloomy of Slytherin in first and fairytaleaddict of Ravenclaw in second. Third place proved a hard choice for voters with a three way tie: thecowboycliche of Hufflepuff, and gringotts and timeasmymeasure both of Ravenclaw. Best coloring went to erzsebet of Gryffindor.

Challenge 4 is open.

hogwartsicons has been busy with notables from each house. Check out some lovely icons of Hermione from senbonzakura77 of Ravenclaw here, a lovely batch with a concentration on Dumbledore by erzsebet of Gryffindor, brightly colored icons and gorgeous wallpaper from lizpin of Slytherin here, and bringing the house pride and lulz is pickle_breath of Hufflepuff.

Busy couple of weeks for fanart, keep it up!

January is only nearing to a close but 2010 is already rocking over at hh_clubs! I'm Angel, and let's welcome lots of new club leaders ushering in a great term of creative activities. xfortytwo of Divination Club foresees you running over to join her new roster. zestyzorra snapped you checking out the Shutterbug Society's new roster. Fans of the Slug Club will love the_gubette's new roster. dither_spaz has jumpstarted DADA with a new roster, while nanerbear has planted a Herbology roster! The new Smarmy roster, care of peyton07, joins the History of Magic roster by wandersfound.

While the year's just started, the Hogwarts Houses are hard at work keeping the clubs alive with lots of participation in various activities. The Ravenclaws members of Charms Club mastered Reverse Disillusionment and wrote festive Christmas cards for the DA. Gryffindor's got the Music Club's guessing games in their paws and showed their love for Transfiguration. The Puff Parade and Slytherin Snakes aren't far behind, with Yule Ball fashionistas and House Elf drabble experts, respectively. Let's keep this amazing momentum going, everyone!

As for activities that are just about winding down, we've got trivalent of Slytherin charming us with a winning pick-up line: Draco: Are you really that thick, Potter?. sibyllevance pleased Dobby with her uniform choices over at S.P.E.W. Sorters Anonymous broke the fourth wall with their popular movie character sorting, while Divination channeled the power of the mind with the equally popular Pallomancy activity.

If you love art, come check out the new banner winners of the Transfiguration Club, the Owl Post Secret Club and the Shutterbug Society. Art Club's first activity results can be crowed over here.

With so much activity, you must be wondering what else they could possibly be looking for. Well, the answer is Y-O-U, so come join a club (or two or seven) and let magic into your life!

Rumour has it that the Hufflepuff's are plotting to get points from one of our fearless leaders. So far, the plan consists of a large amount of alcohol and some smooth talking. Sounds like a fun time for all.

On the other side of things a certain former mod and a current main mod are whispered to be very friendly with one another. Is there a romance blooming in the halls?

Finally, a Gryffindor who is known for their Claw and Snake tendencies has found their way into the Hufflepuff chat. No one knows how they found out the name but they are getting a friendly welcome.

Sounds like an exciting start to term.

Greetings, animal lovers! Term XVI is well under way over at hih_animagus, with two batches of voting already posted. Voting concluded for Applicants #315-#319 on January 18, and our five applicants received many intriguing form choices, from a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird to an African Bush Elephant! Perhaps equally as fascinating were the point totals, with Ravenclaw swooping in and earning 1580 points! I daresay that is the largest total ever seen at hih_animagus from one house, but don't quote me. ;) Slytherin's total was nothing to sneeze at, with 420 points! Gryffindor and Hufflepuff also did admirably with 290 and 230 points, respectively. There is still time to vote on the second batch (Applicants #320-#324) over here. The deadline is January 30, 2010 at 9 PM UTC (3 PM EDT). Can Ravenclaw beat 1580 this time around? Only time will tell.

For those of us who already have our animagus forms, the first monthly activity of January at hih_wilderness has already come and gone. Participants enthusiastically discussed the place at which we lay the distinction between taken and untaken forms. Ultimately, the moderators plan to keep about the same standard of sub-species/distinctions between animals as the standard for animagus forms. You can see the results of that discussion here. Congratulations to Ravenclaw for earning the most points! The first Scavenger Hunt of the month also ended a few days ago, and results are expected soon.

If you have recently acquired an animagus form - or will in the future, please note that the moderators are now asking applicants to specify their colouration and/or markings upon registration. For those of us who already have our animagus forms, take advantage of this one time deal (found here) to specify colouration and/or markings and change the image in your registry snapshot!

Interested in socializing? You can find Pack Bonding here. It's not too late to discuss your 2010 New Year's Resolutions!

Finally, I'd like to give belated congratulations to the December Animagus of the Month: Elaine // accountingwitch of Ravenclaw!

Until next time!

It’s Term XVI, everyone, and so far I hope it’s been good! After official elections we, once again, have the fabulous et_tu_lj presiding as our Hogsmeade mayor over at hogsmeadewkends. She’s done a great job in her post so far, and I’m sure that there’s lots of fun ahead! That being said, I know you’re all itching for our first Hogsmeade Weekend – and luckily it’s coming up quick! After a poll, it’s been decided that the first weekend of the term will take place February 19 through 21! And we have our theme, as well: Valentine’s! (For more info, you can check out this post). Now this will of course influence our normal Hogsmeade activities, but this theme has special bearing on our shopowners over at hh_flourish. The new rules for Hogsmeade tags state that now only Gift, Hogsmeade-related, and THEMED tags are allowed to be offered in the shops, so make sure than any tags you plan to offer comply! But that’s not the only change our fantastic Flourish Mods are implementing; now you have a chance to offer up your wares even if you don’t have a shop! They are now introducing Hogsmeade Stalls! This is simply an opportunity for any members who don’t currently operate a Flourish Shop to earn points for their house through their graphics. There are either six or seven stalls open, depending on how many shops a house currently has. Preference will be given to those in line for a shop spot to open, to help them get some experience with the process. And don’t worry, prospective stall operators, if it looks a little daunting! You have more lenient delivery times, so don’t fret if you can’t get all your tags made in just one weekend! If you’re interested, SIGN UP HERE! But hurry, sign-ups end 27 January at 9PM UTC. And keep a look out for social director sign-ups as well as activity sign-ups for club leaders coming soon!

If your curious about what goes on, newbies, join the comm and check out previous weekends. And don't worry, just by joining the main comm and your common room your permission slip is already signed. See you in Hogsmeade, everyone!

Considering there hasn't been a single match played, the quidditch season of term XIV at Hogwarts is Home is shaping up to be an eventful one! It began with team trials, which produced talented teams for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw with lots of depth. Trials will be continuing for Hufflepuff and Slytherin to round out their rosters as well, and when that happens we're certainly going to have a competition on our hands! Prospective Hufflepuff and Slytherin quidditch players should be on the lookout to get involved because it is most definitely not too late!

Greetings HIH and welcome to a new term! Boy has it been an eventful few weeks in Godric's great house!
First things first, I want to congratulate my housemates on being Quidditch Champions
and for WINNING THE HOUSE CUP for Term Fifteen!!!

What amazing accomplishments. Gryffindor participation was truly amazing this past term and I am so proud to be in this house!

With the new term has come new challenges. We are currently in the process of finding two new prefects. We've also lost a few of our most involved members and they will be missed, however, something has happened during this time that is truly remarkable. With all the misinformation, hurt feelings, and speculation came something else - the real Gryffindor spirit has shone through. I’ve never seen so many true expressions of love, encouragement and hope in our Common Room as I have in the last few weeks. Gryffindors have stepped up to take over all our needs: activity reminders, social posts, birthday celebrations, spotlight posts, etc. I am really amazed by everyone. People have voiced their disagreements and faced them with love and compassion, taking responsibility for their mistakes. Bravo, Gryffindor!

As of this writing, I don’t have a link to prefect voting, but if you haven’t done it yet, GO VOTE GRYFFINDORS! Several of our most dedicated members have stepped up to apply and I can’t wait to welcome our new prefects!

We have lots of exciting things happening this term: The Gryff Fit Club is back, thanks to alohachary1851. We’re learning all kinds of things about what being healthy really means and getting lots of encouragement for our healthy efforts. Gryffs are also getting an opportunity to shine through our PIRATE SHIPS! Gryffs are boarding their favorite pirate ships (go Millenium Falcon!) and earning dubloons and glory for participation. Thanks so much to erzsebet for all your help on this project! We’re also getting our fandoms on with our awesome Book Club , a’ la dither_spaz and Cine-Gryff film screenings with yours truly. (I also want to thank sparkle_fingers and rhye for your help this week, as well as all those who had kind words for me while my son was so ill. Again, the compassion in Gryffindor is remarkable!)

A word of welcome to our newcomers: There are many of you this term, and already we’re seeing your true colors. New cubs are jumping right in, joining us in chat and making their way. There’s lots to do, and a lot of confusion these days, but you are now part of a sparkly noble house. Feel free to participate, add your input, and leave your paw prints in the common room. You are welcome here! Now go forth ye lions and PARTICIPATE!
Let’s go for three terms in a row!

If you haven't already, go fill out the new member survey so we can get to know you better!

Also, our new prefects, Lauren//thecowboycliche and Mandy//mandyloo have taken the reins, and introduced some new things to the wonderful house of Hufflepuff. One big thing we've started is The Quest, a twist on the Puffs of the Round Table quests from the past. See the information post here, and this post here to see what activities qualify! What rank will you be?

Also coming up in the Hufflepuff Common Room is a Movie Night led by Ing//xfortytwo and Muffin//muffinpatronus - we're going to watch A Very Potter Musical! Keep an eye out for an availability post coming up soon so we can pick a date :).

Props go to the Hufflepuffs that won the Term XV HiH Awards! Hello my dear Hogwartsians! So much has happened already in the land of Ravenclaw this term. Let me start off by welcoming the new additions to the Claw family since the new term started: Janelle/jenjanyou, Nadia/pointblankdarcy, Jen/the_rainbow_jen, Alyshia/deevice, Rani/sanguinari, Jessi/1lostone, Nikki/happinesstrail, Vanessa/iamghostqueen, Jules/thedarkmark, Megan/megggannn, and Ashley/uranoxymoron. Welcome!

In terms of Common Room entertainment, the Zombieclaw faction of the Tower recently set up a thrilling viewing party for a personal favorite of mine, Shaun of the Dead. More movie nights to come, Claws! A new term means a new CR layout, and the competition was fierce. Congratulations to Mary/senbonzakura77! Come bask in the cookies splendor of ravenclaw_house!

Once upon a time, there was a massively successful Viking Week that everyone in Ravenclawland enjoyed, so the Prefects in their infinite wisdom created Viking Raids. The first Raid was the Second Contest at sortedchallenge. In celebration of Dumbledore and ...celebrations, 24 Ravenclaws used their pillaging icons (made by the talented Iris/pierhias) to enter in the name of Odin with Isabella/fairytaleaddict's dancing Filch snatching up first and Whitestar/whitestar's excellent Dumbledore icon getting third! In further domination, the Claws seem to have taken Animagus voting under their wing with 29 Claw votes for the last batch! In my interviews with members of HiH, this event has been called both "awesome" and "terrifying." What is that clinking sound I hear? Is that the clinking of talons on this term's House Cup?

In the category of "Ravenclaws = badasses," Claws have also shown strong participation in their favorite clubs and with fine results. Scarlet/deadly_lemonade won the Owl Post Secret's banner competition with an absolutely stunning entry! Ravenclaws made up three out of four winners in Astronomy Club's The Sky is Yours; congrats to Kaitlin/ed1nburgh, Iris/pierhias, and Sas/theaeblackthorn! WTG CLAWS!

As always, keep up with voting at platform_934 and purchasing at hh_flourish. I'm ever so proud of the enthusiasm this house has shown so far, and I want us to keep it up! MUCH LOVE!

It's a new month, a new term, and a new year, and what better way to begin 2010 and Term XVI than with the much-anticipated Slytherin Section! Woohoo! I NEED TO HEAR YOU SLITHER, SNAKEYS.

If you didn't know by now, the dungeons are once again headed by two veteran Slytherins, Annalisa (willfully) and Fox (slyfoxesq), who are poised for victory! We will have the cup this term, HiH, mark my words. *cue evil laugh, thunder, and lightning*

Their first brilliant idea? Recruiting an Underboss and Consigliere to help manage our rambunctious little pythons and bring Our Noble House back to the TOP! Welcome Underboss awry and Consigliere trickery! Denise and Elisabeth have straightaway begun their jobs in aiding the Prefects' cause of making the Dungeons a more productive place to be.

What else is new at the Common Room? Our genious Prefects have devised a Pureblood Family Challenge which will test the Slytherins' ambition, skill, and craftiness. Activities for the so-called Cosca Challenges will be spaced out throughout the term, so watch out for them! (Even so, I feel like I have revealed too much. Let's hope I am not eliminated soon because of this...)

Of course, the Snakes had a great showing in the past weeks' activities, and if I had to list them all down, we'd have a problem with space in the paper. (This is paid for, you know, by your Hogwarts tuition.) YOU DID AWESOME, GUYS, and I'm sure everyone's proud of where we are now. We will get that cup this term or else!

And now this is where we shout out to all the new snakeys who have just recently joined us this month: Welcome to lambertftw, smrtcock, quiescent, theskywasyou, mneiai, windandcoffee, strawberry_star, killerspork33, seatbeltdrivein, secret_savior, and marchenland! WOO there sure are a lot of you, which just makes our goal even more secure. >:]

Oh, and by the way, don't forget to comment here if you don't want to be kicked out of the dungeons.

That's it for this edition of the Slytherin Section, HiH! Until next time, when we bring you the latest inside information from-ooomph *is gagged, tied up, and thrown into a jail cell for revealing too much*
