Who was your idol growing up and do you still have an idol today?
- Hero Seeking Hufflepuff
Hero Seeking Hufflepuff,
I'm not sure if I ever had much in the way of an actual idol, but there were figures that I admired greatly all the same. One such figure was the legendary wizard Merlin. As all young wizards do when they are small, difficult though it may be to imagine your wizened headmaster in such a state, I grew up hearing the name Merlin everywhere. I'm proud to say that I've probably read all literature available on the man. As of late, I've had a bit of an interest in the work of certain Muggle philosophers. The writings of John Locke captured me for quite some time. Quite the barmy brilliant man. Always nattering on about the most extraordinary things.
However, I can't tell you who to idolize or who to look up to. Such a thing is personal, and depends entirely on you and who you are.
All the students see you as a sort of serious professor, but we all know you're quite eccentric. When you're alone in your study but in need of some music, what is the first record that you reach for?
- Ravenclaw Muso
I'd like to think that I have quite a broad range of musical tastes, but the truth is that I'm probably a bit of a novice in it all. I do enjoy The Beatles, as most people do. When it's been a difficult day, though, the first record I reach for is Three Dog Night's "Shambala." Unexpected, I'm sure, but it is uncanny how it is able to lift my spirits.

Writers! Put down The Cure's back catalogue.
It's the beginning of the new term here at HiH, and something's got our writers singing the blues. Loved-up romances, rough 'n' tumble bromances and even good ol' dependable crackfic are officially old hat over at hh_sugarquill. Nah, this season it's all about THE ANGST.
Here's a rundown of the top four tearjerkers; but I warn you, you're going to need several boxes of Kleenex.
alohachary1851 kicks us off with this spot-on character piece of the most misunderstood Slytherin since Snape got extreme-wedgied, Regulus Black. Just before he makes that final trip from his family home, locket in hand and Kreacher in tow, Reggie has a final muse on the bizarre nature of Fate. Wibble. Chary really has this character down, so be sure to have a perusal of her other works - this is a particular favourite of mine, exploring that difficult choice between becoming a Gryffindor spare or a Slytherin heir.
twilight2shadow made even this staunch anti-Tonks activist bawl in an emotional focus on Remus Lupin's last moments with his young wife. Told from the perspective of Tonks, When Storms Collide follows Dora through the final battle as she races to be by the side of the man she loves. But we all know how that went down, sniff-sniff. I'll say this: here is a girl who really knows how to wrap up a fic, and if you want more then I'd suggest starting here with what may turn out to be your favourite Voldie/Bellatrix fic ever.
pretty_liquor is up next with a truly touching short piece on what it is to be a supportive wife of a prominent Deatheater and Ministry turncoat. Narcissa struggles with her husband's involvement with the Dark Lord, but she'll never let it show. Emotional shudder of GRIEF. If you're still standing after that then why not have a gander at this past fic outlining a fun day at a Deatheater's Coffee morning? NC-17, and not a small bit stomach-churning.
From one Sam to another, latenightcuppa continues her great line in Grindeldore with this fantastic insight into the lovestruck mind of one Albus Dumbledore. Disillusioned with words, in the end all that matters to the future Headmaster is one look. Apparently Sam's on a bit of a roll because the very next day she upset the community again with a poignant fic about James Potter's final revelation on this earth. As a close friend I can confirm that yes, she's doing it on purpose, explicitly to make you cry. WAIL.
Well, that's my mascara half way down my face again, thanks guys. Until next issue, for the love of god and emotional stability of fanfic correspondents:

There have only been four art pieces posted so far this term, and I thought they were all so beautiful that I couldn't bring myself to leave any of them out. Our fanartists are so much fewer than our fanficcers, but the work they produce is phenomenal!
My personal favorite is of course the Term XIII Slytherin Class Photo by the amazing slyfoxesq of Slytherin. Of course I'm biased (there is no way I could be unbiased about this one, since I'm featured in the drawing), but I doubt anyone from any house would disagree with me when I say that this piece is absolutely incredible. Kai drew a grand total of thirty-three of the HiH Slytherins, each with individual features and coloring, and finished off the whole thing with a background of the dungeons. It represents a victorious term for Slytherin, and it will be adorning my fellow housemates' walls and desktops for a long, long time.
In other fanart news, two well-loved characters have been memorialized by beeinmybonnet of Ravenclaw and chalada of Gryffindor. Anna's portrait of Sirius Black, Non Est Ei Similis, conveys everything about Sirius that I associate with him. Cocky, bold, and handsome, his stare makes you wonder who he's looking at (good fuel for the imagination of Sirius shippers).
Meanwhile, Tanja (chalada) has captured Lily Evans in a happy, summery moment. You look handsome in a dress features a young, fiery-haired Lily posed in a summer dress, as if - as the title suggests - she is being admired by someone off camera (and who could blame them?).
Last but certainly not least, another fellow Slytherin of mine, Mari (canarycream) has created a very imaginative piece for Sugarquill challenge #60, some mad hope. Her piece, Nimbus 2000, features a broom that longs to fly free, on its own. And it goes to show that early morning ideas should not be ignored - that's why we have a community for insomniacs, after all.
Keep up the good work, artists! I can't wait to see more from you.
It's a new term, and many clubs have cleaned up their rosters and workspaces. Other changes are afoot. windshifter has passed the Shutterbug Society on to alwaysawkward of Gryffindor, also known around HiH as one of your Flourish Mods. There is also a rumor that darthsarah will be passing SPEW on to whomever else has an interest in House Elves. If that's you, keep your eyes open for an application.
Also in Clubs news, the History of Magic Club has scaled down its bonus items points. The details are here. It looks like other clubs, perhaps Sorters Anon, might follow suit?
Not too many winners this early in the term, but there are a couple to announce. Ravenclaw House took top place in the Herbology Club word search, whereas Slytherin was victorious at palm reading.
Want to be in the next Prophet Club Column? The Current Tag is your friend.
Don't forget also to check the rosters when you participate in an activity. Many clubs have cleaned out their rosters for the new term, and you may not get your points if your name is not on the club roster. There is also an ongoing discussion among HiH leadership and club leaders as to what club roster rules will be for Hogsmeade, but it's looking right now as if most everyone is a fan of consistency in the rules, regardless of what the outcome of the decision is.
ALSO-- your new clubs mods are cheredemoiselle and musikurt. Give them a rowdy welcome!
A Hot Mess in Fancy Dress
Spotted through a crack in their office door, a certain Dark Arts Professor with a blinding smile. We know that the Professor loves his fabulous robes, but we didn't know it extended to frills and lace. Thankfully his memory's been wiped, but the Healer's at St. Mungo's say he's been drawing fancy patterns of ball-gowns on napkins.
There Be Dragons WHERE?
Overheard in the Tower: a certain Gryffindor has broken into Gringott's and set their dragon loose! But what's the motive? Illegal breeding and egg smuggling? Bloody, murderous revenge? A lark, a jape, a giggle? How many dragons does Gringott's have, anyway? It might be time for a headcount.
Got gossip? Spill it here!
It's a new term at hih_insomniacs and there are some old faces and some new ones as well. The wonderful alwaysawkward is once again at the helm of the late night community. Helping out for the first half of the term as Ambassadors are Gryffindor's zestyzorra, Hufflepuff's hellkat75, Ravenclaw's msninacat and Slytherin's malfoymercy. Be sure and watch your Common Rooms for reminder posts from these wonderful volunteers. There are lots of house points to be earned at hih_insomniacs. One last piece of business from last term is a big shout out to alight of Gryffindor who was April's Insomniac of the Month. Congrats Victoria for taking the top Insomniac Honor!
May Scavenger Hunt #1 results were posted with Slytherin taking a commanding lead and showing why they won the House Cup last term. Ravenclaw was a close second, Gryffindor came in third and the Puffs were in last place. May's Scavenger Hunt #2; The Spoof's On You was due today so be on the lookout for those results in the next issue. Also, make sure you keep an eye out for the voting for Activity #1, Title of the Song.
Also, don't forget to check out the Friday Five Social Post here and May's Birthday Post here . And if you missed it, check out butterfly269200's Ode to our Leader here, an awesome post in tribute to Steph.
Until next time, remember “Nothing cures insomnia like the realization that it's time to get up!”
slyfoxesq and xfortytwo have returned as our Animagus mods, and have released the points for the latest vote! The Slytherins dominated the voting process, with Hufflepuffs close behind, and we eagerly await what the four new Animagi will pick! Huzzah to the new joiners!
Slytherin kept up their winning streak from last term in the magazine story submission activity, with avocado_love and silveredaccents taking first place. slyfoxesq, also of Slytherin, came second, and dawnfarie of Hufflepuff broke their sweep.
The Lions and Claws are making a disappointing showing (WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?!), so they're especially encouraged to participate in the new discussion activity. What do we know about Animagus transformations? We know that McGonagall's just about the only registered Animagus, that it allows people to transform into rather distinctive animals...and then what? Do they change form according to personality change, like Patronuses? Do they always have distinctive markings? What are the terrifying side effects if a transformation goes wrong?! Join the budding discussion here if you've got an opinion!
You need to be an Animagus to participate by purchasing the Standard Book of Spells (1 through 5) at Flourish & Blotts, then submit an application here. Make sure you also mention the Animagus who referred you: the Packmasters Program rewards your referee with bonus points in activities for every new Animagus s/he brings in *nudgenudgewinkwink*.
However, voting is a points and knuts free-for-all, with anybody earning up to 10 points and a knut per vote! So come on down to hih_animagus and help people see their more animalistic sides!
Hogsmeade has a new Mayor, and she's already revolutionizing life in our favorite Scottish town. Er, for students, at least. Permission slips have been checked; dates have been set; and renovations are beginning! Join the Hogsmeade Beautification Project by submitting a community layout here before midnight EST on May 25th.
No thanks, you say? I'm no good at coding? Then you'll probably just want to know about your next opportunity to stock up on Nose-Biting Teacups!
The first Hogsmeade Weekend of Term XIV is scheduled for the weekend of June 26-28! The theme, of course, will be summer. If you're a club leader or moderator who would like to host an activity, sign-ups begin on May 26. Social Directors hopefuls, you'll have to move fast to answer the call on June 12. Everyone else, you'd better start shopping for the Hogsmeade Dance now! You'll regret procrastinating when your only options are lime-green or "only slightly moth-eaten." Trust me. I've been there.
Not much is happening on the Quidditch Pitch this early in the new term. We now have TWO Quidditch moderators: music_simbol and accountingwitch! Hopefully this will reduce the stress that comes with the position. (I still think that referee apparated to the middle of the Sahara to escape the game!) alwaysawkward and msninacat have returned to Captain the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw teams, but cheredemoiselle of Hufflepuff and silveredaccents of Slytherin have brand new Captain badges on their robes.
The teams are filling in fast, too. Hufflepuff desperately needs more players, and the other three teams are still looking for alternates. View the team rosters here. Want to play? Read the rules, then sign up here!
Will the Cup remain in the dungeons or find a new home at the end of Term XIV? Watch this column and hh_quidditch to find out!
St. Mungo's is under new leadership: alohachary1851 (G) is graduating this spring with a physiology degree. She studies asthma. She brings the expertise. I bring the obsessive logistical sense.
New Roster + Healer/Healer-in-Training Application Post.
Ward Leader Applications
So far only one person has applied to lead a ward. hiddengrace (H) will be the Ward Leader for the Common Magical Illnesses ward. Our ward system cannot get underway until we have more ward leaders. Some of the logistics are still being finalized, but the basics are all there for you.
[What is a Ward?]
Wards are groups of healers and trainees with the same health-related interest. Wards are like clubs in that they will each focus on a specific area and present their own activities. Wards are also UNLIKE clubs: people who are not members of your ward are encouraged to participate in ward activities. It is your job as a ward to educate HiH about your topic.
[What is a Ward Leader?]
Responsibilities of a ward leader are similar to those of a club leader. You will be expected to host ~1 activity per month. To become a Ward Leader, you must be a Healer for a month, and participate in two activities. We are leaving it up to YOU to decide the wards. If you have a particular interest, apply early. We are only taking six ward leaders.
[Healers In Training ROTATIONS]
To graduate to Healer status, you must participate in activities in at least THREE different wards.
Interested in promoting fitness at HiH? Awareness of some particular disease? Philanthropic activities? Spell damage? APPLY TO LEAD A WARD TODAY!

Oh, sorry, were you looking for us? We may not be able to hear you over the sound of our clinking rum bottles, the disheveled manes that cover our ears or our inability to pay attention to anything for longer than 2 minutes.
Besides the never ending party in the common room, the well coiffed Lions of Haus Gryffindor have been QUITE BUSY. Yes, the Lions are stretching their muscles and preparing for a marathon called Modding HiH. There are 10 mod positions being run by the crack prone and sanity deficient children of Godric. It is the greatest experiment since the founding of America. Good luck, HiH.
Gryffindor's Senior Prefect alohachary1851 is back for another term of lulz, laze and CAPSLOCK that is SURE TO ENSUE IN JULY. Junior prefect alight has taken the place of niicole_m and vows to be Gryffindor's Hero (and kiss away their pain, lyrics courtesy of Enrique Iglesias). The Senior prefect awaits her fulfillment of this campaign promise.
Gryffindor already has an In-House going on for May and JUNE is already in the
Do not let this guise of srs bznss fool you, the Gryffindors still have their phasers set on funky.
A brand new Hogwarts Toilet Seat and Ton Tongue Toffee to the newest Lions: ldsbdogg, kiebeau, keropi080, snugduff, picturegames, loupcelte, margalite and adventurerobot. May you live long and prosper in the Cracky House of Gryffindor.
Is the Term XIV cup in their sights? Well, the personal liquor supplies are running low and it is about time the Gryffindors get a big enough cup to combine their efforts. Sit back, relax, enjoy some Earl Grey tea, hot and enjoy the show as the Gryffindors Boldly Go Where No Gryff has Gone Before.... WORK

Whoo, I made it back in time to report to live, well sort of live, from the kitchens!! That mission in Germany was murder! I’m fully recovered and ready to permeate your mind with awesome news!
Let’s start by throwing a few cupcakes of love at our prefects for this term, new prefect butterfly269200 and returning prefect jethros_mom! Sorry we got icing on your fur ladies, but you know cupcakes are unpredictable, something to do with lift versus drag. Also, a shout out to laurahonest for one heck of a term!
Hey, what’s that you say, new badgers? Let’s give them a snuggle, shall we! Roll call- i_am_girlfriday, mrs_jack_turner, gracie_in_greek, corpusdraconis, xchelsizzlex, and sweetnessarose, welcome to you all!
As this is a new term and I’ve been on sick leave, I honestly have no idea what’s been going on! Let me see here…(Andie throws stuff from her trunk trying to find the news) ah, we have some new Puff animagi!!! classical_wolf, dawnfarie, devils_sidekick, and me, andromeda0604 are officially animagi with banners to prove it! Woot! Check out it, you may want to become one, too!
The Herbology club mistress saw fit to honor a couple of Puffs for their loyal participatory skills, congrats to classical_wolf for all eight activities and miss_un_known for seven of the eight activities!
There was a little Wizarding on Muggling going on, if you know what I mean, in the Muggle Cultural Society at the end of last term. Hufflepuff remixed muggle movies to our advantage and came out on top!
I know I wasn't able to fit in a lot this issue, but trust me it only gets better!!
Until next issue, I'm off to save the Trans-Siberian Orchestra or the Siberian Orchestra's Trans Am! Whatever, do svidaniya!
'Claws, it’s a new term, which means a new opportunity to make grabby hands, er, talons, for the cup. We were in a fairly close second – let’s not let that happen again! We worked incredibly hard last term, and the snakes were excellent competition.
New terms are exciting, amirite? We say goodbye to omfgerbear as our beloved prefect and welcome back mynamelessname, who took a term off from prefect-dom, as well as our slightly frightening accountingwitch. Let’s hope these ladies lead us to another Viking victory!
I’d like to congratulate et_tu_lj for being extremely winful last term, and gaining 500 points for Ravenclaw for being the most active member. Thank you for being awesome, that’s the kind of work ethic we like to see around the tower… *suggestive look at common room*
In-house contest time!
Let’s kick this term off with an in-house contest. May’s contest is a banner collage – go here and submit pictures for our new banners. There’s some good ones, but NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. Earn six points and three knuts per submission, with a cap of 18pts/9kts.
FRIENDING MEME, GO. This is a good way to make friends with fellow Vikings, and we have a lot of excellent and interesting people in the Common Room who share common interests.
Welcome all new ‘Claws to the tower, the house that will be winning the cup this term, yes. Don’t let our
Now let us all congregate in Claw Chat to begin scheming for this term’s victory.
Rah Rah Ravenclaw!
Congrats, Slytherin, on winning the House Cup for Term 13. This was a team effort, and if you aren't too drunk from over consumption of alcohol yet, take some time to savor the full glory of the moment with by listening to the Slytherin soundtrack! Furthermore, send your best to our reigning prefects (who are back for Term 14), darthsarah and slyfoxesq!
If you don't mind taking a break from the party, please welcome our newest members: mmailliw (who just celebrated another year), princessbloomy, simultaneities, and starlight_brite. Don't be shy, guys. Grab yourself a chair and enjoy the celebrations.
And for anyone who hasn't seen it yet: slyfoxesq's lovely rendering of the cup-winning house.
Unfortunately, guys, we need to hold on to this cup if we want the revelry to last. So participate in the new in-house contest right quick! For more points earning activities see the Slytherprompt.
Slytherin also has a new and cunning plan. For more information, check here. It's devious, I tell you.
However, our Snakes aren't all bad. Here's a shout out to our new Order members: supremacy_born, malfoymercy, absolutelybatty, djmayhem_aubrey, and mrdavismd! Rest assured, they are out there fighting the good fight, and representing the Slytherin house.
If you are still looking for something to do, the Slytherin quidditch team could always use more alternates. Apply right over here.
So welcome to Term 14, Snakes. Get your tails busy. We've got a reputation to live up to this term. Remember every little bit counts. Everyone has done a good job so far; so let's keep it up!
