"Dear Dumbledore,

Is there any way we could please get some WiFi in the castle? It would be awfully nice to be able to check on things back home without having to send owls to all my unsuspecting friends. And it would be great to be able to check my dashboard and messages. What if my queue gets empty before winter break?!

Marooned Muggleborn"

Dear Marooned Muggleborn,

Unfortunately there are just some things that we are unable to provide here in Hogwarts, and an atmosphere that allows the use of both Muggle technology with magic is just one of those limitations. You might want to consider putting up a hiatus notice so that your unsuspecting friends are aware that you'll be away at boarding school. However — please do not send owls to Muggles unless they are immediate family.

"Dear Dumbledore,

Is there any way you can allow for Pumpkin Spice Lattes to be served in the Great Hall? Or convince Madam Rosmerta to start selling them at the Three Broomsticks? Butterbeer is great and all, but I really miss PSLs!

Starbucks Addict"

Dear Starbucks Addict,

You'll be happy to know that Starbucks is finally opening up a branch in Hogsmeade. Dear old Howard Schulz was an alumni, you know (Slytherin — if the logo did not already clue you in on that) — he's been very keen on the whole thing from the very start but faced resistance from the Hogsmeade Town Council for a very long time.

"Dear Dumbledore,

In Muggle Studies, we have been learning about a variety of Muggle objects. Today we were introduced to a rubber duck! Do you know what this strange object is for? Are there rubber owls and rubber cats that muggles play with, too?

Curious-er and curious-er"

Dear Curious-er and curious-er,

You'll find Muggles have rather a very strong imagination and that some objects may not always have a designated use, but that does not mean they are not to be enjoyed. The ducks, as I understand it, are meant to float in the water during a bath. I am certain rubber owls and rubber cats exist as well, though ducks are likely more prevalent.

"Dear Headmaster,

I've asked a question to Professor Burbage but she said she didn't know the answer, so I thought I would ask you. I hope you don't mind. I don't mean any disrespect to Professor Burbage, I think she is a great teacher — actually, I was surprised she couldn't answer my question, and to tell you the whole truth, I suspect she didn't want to, because she blushed and quickly changed the subject, and I thought she was a specialist about Muggles, right? It was just something my cousin, who has a Muggle mother, mentioned... Or maybe my cousin just made fun of me and Professor Burbage didn't want to tell me. Anyway, here's the question: Is it true Muggles have rabbits that vibrate? Because that sounds a bit odd to me. Why would they? Did my cousin just mean they purr? Maybe she just lacks vocabulary. I'm confused.

A curious Muggle studies pupil."

Dear Curious,

Yes, Professor Burbage is a specialist about Muggles. I am sorry about the confusion.

Look, it’s fanfiction! It’s the start of a new term, and there have been some changes. The new mod for SQ is Whitney/csichick_2, and we are more than happy to have her in charge.

Before we take a look at what the new term has to offer, let’s talk a bit about Term XXIX. During the last term, 290 posts were made to hh_sugarquill and 12,362 points were earned from those posts. There were also four monthly bingos and one fest to participate in during Term XXIX.

Term XXIX Sugarquill Superlative Winners are in! Favourite Fanficcer was Crystal/bluemermaid of Hufflepuff, who also won the titles for Best Poem (Albus Dumbledore and With Darkness Creeping) and Best Ficlet (What Is Proper). You can see all the other winners here.

The results for the final Writer’s Block for the last term (#6 to be exact!) are also in. The theme was “One Letter”. Congratulations to Jalen/jalenstrix for coming in first with Entry B, along with Maryann/memeann012084 with Entry D. Second place went to Johanna/monkiainen with Entry C and Beth/prongsy with Entry E. Kat/feuerfunke took third place with Entry A. Well done, everyone! All of the entries can be read here.

And now for something completely different — Term XXX!

September Prompts are up – you can find them here. Bei/sapphoatsunset has already tackled the Fic Challenge #165 with Where Everyone Knows Your Name.

Other works you might enjoy reading are Masquerade by Delphine/nearlyconscious, a wonderful ficlet about Gabrielle/Ginny and masquerade balls. If you are more interested in something more fluffy, go and read Homesick by Whitney/csichick_2, which features both Bill and Percy Weasley.

Don’t forget the Saturday Specials, where you have only 48 hours to write 1,000 words or more to earn some extra points for your house.

Last but not least, the current Writer’s Block can be found here. You have still have time to participate, as the deadline is 19 September, 11:59pm UTC.

I hope that Term XXX will bring us many more great fics, ficlets, drabbles and poems to read. Until next time, dear readers!

Welcome, welcome to the start of a new term! You all know what this means, right? New term, new mods and new shiny things to come! But first off, let's tidy a few things up over at sortedchallenge. With Challenge 13, our participants went back to our roots with some beautiful icons.

Making great use of lighting, Michi/heartsignite of Gryffindor placed 1st, while Tiffany/growling and Jenna/jennashaped of Slytherin placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Caitie/caitieness of Hufflepuff received the award for "most creative".

Challenge 14 was a different beast all together. The mods challenged everyone to a participation-only challenge inspired by past prompts. Check out all of the submissions right here. Here is one example of the great Tumblr-sized graphics that were submitted.

Caitie/caitieness of Hufflepuff

By the next edition, I should have the results for the challenges of this term, but for now, let me present you our new mods. Hailing from Slytherin, we have Jenna/jennashaped, who is modding for the first time! Teaming up with Jenna, we have Morgan/wizbey of Gryffindor. Stop by the Mod Post if you have any questions or suggestions.

And now let's see what is new at hogwartsicons. Ravenclaw's Bei/sapphoatsunset already made herself at home as a mod and posted the Term XXX Welcome & Suggestion/Ideas/Comments Post. For lovers of spreadsheets, Bei has the thing for you here. Bei also has a few announcements. By way of a quick recap, here is what you all need to know: The 10 Variations Post is still being monitored so feel free to make use of it, the 20in20 table has made a comeback and finally the special term event for this community will be a fanmix exchange. And now let there be graphics!

Are you looking for a new wallpaper for back to school? Kristine/flipflop_diva has some featuring the animals of Harry Potter.

Stop by Kristine's post to see all of the wallpapers

Ravenclaw's Evy/slumber treated us to some beautifully textured Tumblr graphics.

Stop by Evy's post to see all of graphics

If you are looking for inspiration, Week 3's weekly prompts have been posted.

This week's prompts are:
General Prompt: House Objects
Technical/Graphic Prompt: Astronomy Textures

Over at hh_sugarquill, Whitney/csichick_2 of Hufflepuff posted the Term XXX Suggestions and Comments + Contact Post. There is also a survey in that post so do stop by. We haven't had any new art posted this term yet, so let's take a trip to the past!

At around this time last year, Ellie/erzsebet of Gryffindor posted some Quidditch logos. Here is Hufflepuff's logo:

Stop by Ellie's post to see the rest of the art.

In September 2012 after the announcement of the new mods, Muffin/muffinpatronus of Gryffindor posted this hilarious drawing of Voldemort and his death eaters deciding to play a bit of Mario Kart Wii.

Stop by Muffin's post to leave a comment.

That's it for this edition of the Daily Prophet. I wish you all a great start of term (and a good school year to those of you who are still a student)! If you want more art and graphics, do stop by our lovely communities. Keep on being creative and making beautiful work, and you might find yourself in the spotlight in our next edition!

Welcome to Term XXX and the first edition of Clubs for the Daily Prophet. First, a big thank you to Chelsea/interchanges and Kristine/flipflop_diva for their hard work on Term XXIX. Also a big welcome to Patricia/bookishgeek and welcome back to Kristine/flipflop_diva for the upcoming term.

August's Club Leader of the Month was Evy/slumber of Ravenclaw. After almost 3 years, Evy left the DADA club, and we thank her for all her hard work at clubs! Everyone can nominate a club leader they think does an awesome job. Just head to this post before the end of the month.

Also finishing up from last term's business was the Amazing Clubs Race. This two-week clubs activity ended with William/mmailliw of Slytherin in first place, Ren/renrenren3 of Ravenclaw in second and Kat/feuerfunke of Hufflepuff in third. Congrats to them and everyone who raced the race! Everyone who crossed or just participated received a tag so be sure and check for yours here.

For the new term business, just remember that if you want your bonus points, be sure and check the active roster tag. We had three new clubs in August and one in September, as well as a whole slew of roster cuts for inactive members, so it's a good idea to just click and make sure you're on the roster.

If you want something to do, you can always check the Weekly Round Up at the top of the Clubs page. Most of the clubs have their first activity up for September so click on the 'current' tag and find something fun or interesting to do. If you like writing, check out Divination Club Tetrabiblos. If you like flash games, you can do the Ministry of Magic - Learning to Drive activity. If you like playing Guess Who, play the Defense Against the Dark Arts version.

There is always loads to do at hh_clubs, the place to be at HiH!

Welcome to Term XXX everybody! I'm Sam/valerie_jackson, and I will be your Animagus Correspondant for the term. Here's hoping it's a great one. :D

This term we also welcome Chelsea/interchanges as our new Animagus mod. She's modded the community a couple of times before and also has a lot of experience with other mod positions. It look like she has some fun things planned. Check out her welcome post over here.

The Animagus community is starting out this term with an ABC challenge. Some easy points in a fun repetition game. Check that out over here. That ends on September 19 at 11:59pm UTC. It's worth up to 30points/15knuts so be sure to get it done!

Have you ever wanted to become an Animagus yourself? Master the art by applying here. You don't have to be registered to participate in the activities, but there will always be a bonus for registered animagi, plus who doesn't want to have an animal counterpart? There is still space open in the September batch so get those applications in before the 15th! All you need is The Standard Book of Spells Vol. 1-3 from Flourish and Blotts. On that note, be on the lookout for the next batch of applications to vote on; there are usually tons of points to be had.

August saw 5 new Animagi:
Ophelia/ljusastjarnan of Ravenclaw as a Black Swan
Meg/watchpoint of Ravenclaw as an Indian Elephant
Lou/alethiometric of Ravenclaw as an Eastern American Black Bear
Sam/valerie_jackson of Hufflepuff as a Shetland Sheepdog AND
Patricia/bookishgeek of Gryffindor as a Serval

Welcome to the Wilderness! And until next time, keep rocking.

Hello everyone! Before I begin, I just wanted to say how capital E excited I am to be the writer for this column! I love anything that touches on personalities, etc., so hopefully we can have fun together!

That said, I’m going to be starting what I’d like to think is a humorous series on The Dark Side of the Zodiac. Consider this to be your dose of crack for the week. You’re welcome! XD

Did you know that all that stuff people generally say about star signs is really just the light side? It’s like each of us are both Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker at the same time! It works something like this:

Each of our signs is associated with one of four elements (water, earth, air, fire *cough* they should just say Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor XD). As much as I was jesting, the impact of these elements does match some of our house stereotypes pretty well! E.g. Fire signs are reckless and, at the extreme of things, can become a bit destructive and sociopathic about it. Earth signs are constant and a bit stubborn. Air signs are lackadaisical airheads who term themselves intellectuals, and water signs are moody and brooding. Sound like any of our favourite characters yet, anyone? XD

Each sign also has a ruling planet, which we’ll delve into another time, and a level to which they adapt to change, and whether or not they’re ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’, which is really no more than a binary sort of positive/negative indicators. That cardinality has a real impact too! Cardinal signs like Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn can be pretty bossy according to the darkside, whereas fixed signs like Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius hiiiiii gais can be stubborn and unmovable. (Yeah, just try and change my opinion on something *wink*) As a contrast to both, mutable signs like Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces on the darkside are known to be fickle and quite changeable.

So what does this mean in brief for you? And what else are we going to talk about in this column? Well, I’m glad you asked! And if you didn’t, you really should have *wink wink*

Over the term, we’ll talk about the darkside of these signs when it comes to love, relationships, work, ambition, habits, etc. The whole spectrum of human behavior. But for now, I leave you with a brief Darkside summary of each sign (in the 12 sign system I was born under) and hope that you find it as amusing as I do!

Aries: According to the Darkside, “you’re a loud, overconfident, aggressive thug with way too many Y chromosomes and a will of titanium-clad granite.”

Taurus: “A stubborn,” self-indulgent, “rut-bound bully, fueled by dull resentment and an insatiable love of money.”

Gemini: You’re an “unreliable, roguish sociopath with a light finger and the attention span of a hyperactive mayfly!”

Cancer: Wow, you are definitely a “grumpy, secretive, passive-aggressive grudge-hoarder, with... mood swings and a positive genius for pointless worrying.”

Leo: Vain and arrogant, you’re a “condescending solipsist with imperial longings and an all-pervasive addiction to unconditional sycophancy”

Virgo: “A peevish, hypercritical anal-retentive with an obsession for sterile perfectionism and a pedantic fetish for detail”

Libra: “A vain, shallow, petulant spendthrift with an unerring eye for style over substance and a lifelong dedication to the quest for an easy meal ticket”

Scorpio: “An obsessive, possessive manipulator with an unquenchable lust for power.”

Sagittarius: “A reckless, tactless, obnoxious oaf with a morbid fear of restraint and an addiction to losing your shirt”

Capricorn: “A cold, cruel, petty-minded slave driver with an unsuspected yet unquenchable ambition and addiction to tightfisted penny-pinching.”

Aquarius: “A chilly, detached, eccentric loner with perverse voyeuristic habits and a shard of ice in your heart” *dies laughing* totes moi

Pisces: “A slippery, manipulative, unreliable reality-dodger with delusions of adequacy and an addiction to sentimentality and self-destruction”

Everyone sounds like such dolls! XDD Okay, okay, so I don’t actually think we’re all this extreme. XD But, I find it fun to look at what could be and count my blessings that I’m more sane than some of my Aquarian brethren teehee!

All material references Darkside Zodiac by Stella Hyde

Attack of the Nudist Swimmer?
Rumors have been wide and varied, but general consensus appears to be that Hogwarts has recently taken on a student-- or is it students?-- that like to take a dip in the Lake late at night. Clothing optional.

Three's Company
It looks like there's a romance blooming in the trio and not the one you'd expect. The hickey on Harry's neck is the proof, but the question is, was it Ron or Hermione that put it there?

Snow in the Dungeon
Some sixth-year Ravenclaws decided to get into the Christmas spirit VERY early, as they enchanted the dungeons to produce snow. As if those of us with double Potions on a Monday didn't have enough to deal with.

Hello Flourish visitors, and welcome to the new term!

+ I am delighted to say that last term's mods Nikki/nikkikitty and Whitney/csichick_2 are back to keep Flourish awesome!
+ The current themes are repeated images and animal tags, so make sure to check out deliveries and get those extra points for your themed tags.
+ In case you missed it, the winners for last term's Flourish Superlatives have been announced a while ago here. Go check out the list, and if you made it on there, check the superlatives tag where you can find banners for all the winners, runner-ups and nominees.
+ Even though some great new shops have opened their doors recently, there are still open spots for all the houses. Gryffindor and Ravenclaw have 3 spots open each, Slytherin has 2 and Hufflepuff 1, so if you are interested in having a shop, just apply over here.

And now a word from our shopkeepers ... about their fellow shopkeepers.

1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Caitie/caitieness: This one at least I'm sure is a Harry Potter reference!
Steph/alwaysawkward: Well, the spelling lends itself to being based on the spell, so I'm going to go with that lol.
Ren/renrenren3: I'm not sure what to say about this since it seems pretty straightforward it's from HP.

2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?
Caitie/caitieness: I've ordered sooo many of Tiffany's tags so it's hard to narrow down to just three. But here you go:

Steph/alwaysawkward: OH MAN, Tiffany's stuff is all so amazing! If I had to narrow it down (which is the point here I believe lol), I'd have to go with the following:

The patterns page makes me happy. I love this one especially. The colors are great, the patterns on the leaves are so fitting and the font choice is great.

Originally I had a different nature tag that was my favorite, and then she updated with this one and, surprise!, I had a new favorite. It's just so bleak, kind of cold looking. I love how simple it looks.

I haven't ordered this one yet (I don't think??), but I'll have to. That's one of the things I love about Tiffany's work. She pulls off font combos that seems so odd and she always has a great taste in colors.
Ren/renrenren3: I love all of Tiffany's nature tags but my favourite is this

because of the way the text runs across the whole image but isn't overpowering. I also like this tag

because of the contrast between the b/w of the photo and the bright colours of the text, and this tag

because I love galaxy/space themed tags.

3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Caitie/caitieness: She has such a great style and a good eye for images. I'd love to see (more!) scenery and food tags. Those are my favorite subcatalogs she has!
Steph/alwaysawkward: More tv and movie tags! As a fan of both Justified and Vikings, I would personally love to see more for those. The images she uses are so great that if there were more of anything really, I think I'd be happy lol. Otherwise, there is a pretty good variety in this shop, and I think any new additions would be greatly appreciated.
Ren/renrenren3: Any kind of tags! Tiffany makes such pretty tags, I just want to order all of her catalogue. I'd love more fandom tags, though if she doesn't, I can always order custom tags, haha.

What is the story behind your shop's name?
Tiffany/growling: My shop name is a bit obvious and also one of my favorite spells. Lupin is my favorite HP character, and I have always enjoyed the Boggart scene in both the book and film. It's a fun word — Riddikulus — and I want to bring some of that silliness to my shop. "This class is ridiculous." :)

That's irrelevant
1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Caitie/caitieness: Well, I've always assumed this was some kind of Doctor Who reference based on the banner. I don't actually watch the show to know first hand.
Ren/renrenren3: It's the second half of a joke about time travel.
Tiffany/growling: I am pretty sure that the name is connected with Doctor Who/the saying "What do we want? Time Travel. When do we want it? That's irrelevant." But that is all I know! lol

2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?

Ren/renrenren3: I really like the animagus tag she made for me. Look at this pretty owl!

All of her Leonid Afremov tags are really pretty because of the vivid colours, this

is the one I like best. And also this Castiel tag

... I guess I have a thing for spread wings.

I love the shape and font choice in the first tag, the second is because I love all of Steph's typography tags, and the third one is just lovely in so many brilliant ways!

3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Caitie/caitieness: From the examples you can figure out I like Steph's simplistic style. She chooses really interesting and/or striking things to work with. So I'd love to see some more whimsical comics/cartoons/vectors maybe with food (sensing a theme here?)
Ren/renrenren3: More Destiel tags! And more Ninth Doctor tags!
Tiffany/growling: I would love to see more typography tags, because they are amazing! I also love when Steph just goes wild with silly or funny tags, because she is hilarious. <3

What is the story behind your shop's name?
Steph/alwaysawkward: It's from an image I found on Pinterest regarding Doctor Who. The whole thing was "What do we want? Time Travel! When do we want it? That's irrelevant!" I thought still think actually lol that it's hilarious and just pulled the "that's irrelevant" bit from the end. I use the rest as my cut titles on my posts.

1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Steph/alwaysawkward: "A colloquialism is a word, phrase or other form used in informal language." I think it's just a fun way of saying "here is my stuff, all my random stuff". lol. I actually remember when Caitie opened this shop (Oh I am old), so ... yeah, there's that, which has nothing to do with the question.
Ren/renrenren3: I guess... Caitie likes the word colloquialisms?
Tiffany/growling: I have no clue! I obviously know the word 'colloquialism', but I am at a loss of the special meaning for it for Caitie's lovely shop!

2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?

Surprise! Patterns again! Caitie has a rather lovely selection of patterns tags that I will soon be ordering all of. I especially enjoy the boldness of the colors in this specific tag. Plus I have a weird relationship with triangles, so I like that aspect as well.

WOOO! Futurama! I love Scruffy (he's up there along with Zoidberg). It was hard to pick from this group because I love basically all of them.

Caitie has a fantastic selection of quote tags. This one is probably my favorite out of all of those. I like the quote, very Gryff. ;)
Ren/renrenren3: I like her patterns tags, especially this one

and this one

I love pretty floral patterns in muted colours! And I also like the bright colours in this tag

Caitie has such a wide collection of wonderful tags! I love her creativity with font choices, colors and backgrounds!

3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Steph/alwaysawkward: Again, Caitie has so much! She's been around for so long that there isn't much more she could add lol. Perhaps more movie tags? It's the only thing that seems to be missing from her shop.
Ren/renrenren3: More fandom tags maybe? I've been really into *In The Flesh* and *Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries* lately so everyone should make tags for those shows!
Tiffany/growling: I am excited to see where Caitie goes with her shop next! I would love to see more Friends tags or small tags because her collection is so cute!

What is the story behind your shop's name?
Caitie/caitieness: I didn't want something fandom related in case I grew bored with a fandom, and I was fresh off graduating with a BA in English when I opened my shop, so I kind of wanted something English-y. (I almost went with diction.) Colloquialisms just means slang words and I thought it was fun to say :)

1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name?
Caitie/caitieness: I think this shop was named such because Ren is a fan of the concept of paradoxes? They make for pretty good thought experiments.
Steph/alwaysawkward: A paradox is when something contradicts itself, and (as we've learned from every sci-fi show/movie lol) Ren is really from the future and looks like Maisie Williams/Arya from GoT can't tell us about the future because then she will destroy the world! Or something... IDK.
Tiffany/growling: This is my same dilemma with Caitie's shop...I know what 'paradox' means, but I am sure Ren has a particular reason for naming the shop so, and I would love to know what that reason is! It's a fabulous name!

2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite?

These cartoon sigils from GoT are FREAKIN' ADORABLE. I mean come on! This fish looks so HAPPY!

Under the subcatalog title "internet things", one can find adorable internet things. Mainly Pusheen .gif tags, which are all splendid and lovely. I especially like HP Pusheen. I like the little glasses... >.>

Going three for three on the patterned tags over hurr. Ren has soooo many pattern tags, and they are all super fabulous. I like this one the best, though, all the colors and great font choices. It all works so well together!

I loved the god/goddess tags for the most recent Hogsmeade! So creative and the font choice is fantastic! I also love the owl tags because they are customizable, which is always fun!

3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper?
Caitie/caitieness: My goodness, she has a little bit of everything. I can't even think of something she is missing! I guess I'd like to see more house pride tags because I think she could bring a kind of funky attitude to them.
Steph/alwaysawkward: Probably, seeing as how big a shop she already has, more house pride stuff. That's the only place that it seems like there isn't enough. She has some great stuff there already, just needs a little more. :D
Tiffany/growling: Ren really knows how to use space within her tags, and it is brilliant. I would love to see more seasonal tags, especially for Halloween and Christmas and see where her creativity takes her!

What is the story behind your shop's name?
Ren/renrenren3: There isn't much of a story. A paradox is something that seems impossible or self-contradictory but is true. I'm a bit self-contradictory myself, so I like the word. Besides, I'm a maths nerd and mathematical paradoxes are fun.
