The "Dog Days" of summer are named for the hottest period of time-roughly between early July and mid August. They were called this because early astronomers realized that it was during this period of time, extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the alignment of Sirius (the dog star) and the sun, that it was hottest. So on behalf of Sirius, keep cool and enjoy the few remaining dog days! (Just thought it was a cool factoid).
